The Best Audition Tip EVER (In Less Than 2 Minutes)

Here's a piece of advice that sounds backwards the first time you hear it: walk into your next audition believing you've got no chance.

It's not pessimism. It's a mindset shift straight from a BAFTA-winning film and TV director, and it might be the single biggest thing standing between you and a relaxed, winning performance.

The Problem: Desperation Shows

When you go into an audition or record a self-tape believing you have to get the job, that desperation is visible on screen — even when you think you're hiding it. And here's the counterintuitive part: that desperation doesn't just cost you this role, it tanks your overall odds. Believing you must win the room can drop your real chances from something like 200:1 down to 1000:1.

Why? Because desperation makes actors play it safe. Tight, careful, afraid to make a bold choice in case it's the "wrong" one. And safe, careful performances are forgettable.

The Fix: "You've Got No Chance"

Adopt the mindset that you've got no chance of getting the part, and something strange happens: the pressure disappears. Without pressure, you're free to:

  • Take genuine risks with your choices

  • Actually enjoy the scene instead of white-knuckling through it

  • Deliver a performance that's relaxed instead of desperate

Ironically, that's exactly the kind of performance that gets booked. Casting directors aren't looking for someone who needs the job — they're looking for someone who's good in the room, and good in the room requires the freedom that only comes when the stakes feel lower.

Why This Matters for Your Next Audition

Next time you're prepping a self-tape or walking into a room, try consciously telling yourself: I've got no chance at this — so I might as well have fun and take a swing. It sounds like a trick, but it removes exactly the kind of pressure that ruins performances.

I cover this in full — including why relaxation is what actually leads to getting booked — in the short video below.
